Crisp mountain air, historic locations, national parks, majestic scenery, and a population of less than five thousand are only some of the reasons that people choose to relocate to Buffalo, Wyoming.
Set amidst the natural wonders of northeast Wyoming, it is near some of the country’s most well-known “Wild West” locations. The town has a storied past full of cowboys, Indians, and colorful characters; it was visited by everyone from Calamity Jane to Teddy Roosevelt and contains two museums dedicated to this fascinating time period.
Today it is also home to a thriving community with almost twenty places of worship, a large public school system, seemingly endless hiking, snowmobiling and mountain trails, and a tidy, but incredibly historic downtown district. It also has a remarkably low unemployment rate, almost non-existent crime statistics, and a wide range of labor and industrial opportunities.
There are so many more reasons that the town is found so appealing - consider that it contains one of Andrew Carnegie’s many libraries (now an annex to the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum of the West), the original Occidental Hotel which was the setting for Owen Wister’s landmark western novel “The Virginian”, and an impressive twenty additional buildings that all date back to the 1800’s!
Of course the town is not simply a shrine to the past, and there is plenty to see and do both within and outside of “city limits”. Those who want to get out of town and truly away from it all can enjoy the Clear Creek Trail System just outside of Buffalo. With almost thirteen miles of trails divided between a variety of conditions and hiking skills there is sure to be a nature experience for everyone to enjoy.
