Among the first things to do this summer in Buffalo, Wyoming is to simply get there! The town has an amazing number of recreational, cultural and historic offerings not to mention a colorful and fascinating history. Buffalo isn’t just a place to pass through while headed to the Bighorn National Forest or Mount Rushmore. It is a place to stay and explore because it offers an amazing number of unique, memorable and truly fun summertime experiences.

Do you love the “Old West”? Are you a fan of Butch Cassidy, Calamity Jane and the old “gunslingers”? Then Buffalo has plenty to offer you this summer. All throughout the town itself are buildings, museums and sites that mark some of the most well-known western tales. Have you seen any of the movie versions of Owen Wister’s famous western, “The Virginian”? Right in the center of town is the Occidental Hotel where Mr. Wister set the climactic scene of the book. It was actually dedicated to Teddy Roosevelt, who also visited the town frequently as well.

Are you more interested in seeing the places where the cowboys and Indians rode, fought and slept beneath the stars? Buffalo is surrounded by these spots too. During the summer months visitors can enjoy a visit to Fort Phil Kearny where an incredible battle occurred between the United States Calvary and Native Americans. There is an interactive map that lets guests trace the actual battle across the fields and surrounding hills.

Maybe you’d really like to see true “Outlaw Country”? You can feast on a full day tour of the entire area where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid out, as well as Outlaw Cave which is home to ancient Indian pictographs and can be enjoyed by visitors who opt for this activity.
